TERESA OF CALCUTTA

Patron of the poor, the dying, the lonely, the unwanted, missionaries.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, felt a call to religious life as a teenager. In 1928, she joined the Sisters of Loreto and was sent to India, where she taught for nearly twenty years. In 1946, she received what she described as a 'call within a call' to leave the convent and serve the poorest of the poor living in the slums of Calcutta. This led to the founding of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, an order dedicated to caring for the sick, the dying, the orphaned, and the destitute. For over four decades, she and her sisters provided tangible love and care to those society had cast aside, embodying her belief in doing 'small things with great love.' Today, Catholics revere her as a model of radical charity and a powerful intercessor for those who feel forgotten. She is the patron saint of the poor, the dying, the lonely, and missionaries.
A PRAYER TO TERESA OF CALCUTTA

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, we ask for the grace to see your face in the poorest and most forgotten of our brothers and sisters. Grant us her spirit of compassion, that we may serve others not out of duty, but with genuine love. Help us to perform our daily tasks, however small, with great devotion to you. May her example inspire us to build your kingdom of mercy in our own communities. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
