NICHOLAS OF MYRA

Patron of children, sailors, students, brides, generosity.

Nicholas of Myra was a fourth-century bishop in Asia Minor, renowned for his profound charity and pastoral zeal. Historical accounts, while sparse in detail, consistently highlight his defense of orthodoxy at the Council of Nicaea and his legendary, secret generosity. The most famous story tells of him providing dowries for three impoverished girls by secretly tossing bags of gold through their window at night, an act that established the tradition of gift-giving associated with his modern counterpart, Santa Claus. For Catholics today, Saint Nicholas remains a powerful model of Christian stewardship and discreet compassion, encouraging the faithful to perform acts of kindness without seeking recognition. He is venerated as the patron saint of children, sailors, students, brides, and the poor.
A PRAYER TO NICHOLAS OF MYRA

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Nicholas, your faithful bishop, we ask for your guidance and protection. Inspire in us his spirit of generous charity, especially toward children and those in need. Help us to give quietly and love boldly, following his example of steadfast faith. May his prayers support sailors on the sea, students in their studies, and all who call upon his aid. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
