MONICA

Patron of mothers of wayward children, wives in difficult marriages, alcoholics' families, patience, long-suffering prayer.

Saint Monica was born in North Africa in the fourth century. She married a pagan husband, Patricius, whose temper and infidelity brought her sorrow. Monica endured these trials with prayer and patience, eventually seeing both her husband and mother-in-law convert to Christianity. Her greatest spiritual burden, however, was her brilliant son, Augustine, who lived a dissolute life and embraced the Manichean heresy. For seventeen years, Monica prayed and wept for his conversion, following him from Africa to Rome and Milan. Her persistent prayers were answered when Augustine was baptized by Saint Ambrose in 387, an event that led him to become one of the Church's greatest theologians. For Catholics today, Monica is a model of patient, long-suffering intercession, demonstrating that faith and prayer can prevail over seemingly hopeless situations. She is the patron saint of mothers, wives in difficult marriages, and those who pray for the conversion of loved ones.
A PRAYER TO MONICA

God our Father, through the intercession of Saint Monica, we ask for the grace of perseverance in prayer. Help us to trust in Your timing and Your mercy, especially when praying for the conversion or healing of those we love. Grant us the patience and hope that sustained Saint Monica through years of sorrow. May her example teach us to rely not on our own strength, but on Your boundless love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
