IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA

Patron of soldiers, retreats, education, discernment, decision-making.

Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491 in the Basque region of Spain. A soldier in his youth, his life was redirected after a cannonball shattered his leg. During his long convalescence, he read the lives of Christ and the saints, which sparked a profound spiritual conversion. He dedicated himself to God, undertaking rigorous prayer and penance, and later studied theology in Paris. There, he gathered a group of companions, including Francis Xavier, and together they founded the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, in 1540, which was approved by Pope Paul III. Ignatius is best known for authoring the Spiritual Exercises, a structured guide for prayer and discernment that remains foundational to Ignatian spirituality. For Catholics today, he is a model of conversion and a trusted guide in making life's important choices through prayerful reflection. He is the patron saint of soldiers, retreats, and spiritual exercises.
A PRAYER TO IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, grant me clarity and courage. As he learned to discern your will, help me to find your presence in my daily life and to make choices that lead me closer to you. Guide those in education, those serving in the military, and all who seek direction in a second career. May we, like Ignatius, offer our lives completely to your greater glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
