GEORGE THE MARTYR

Patron of soldiers, scouts, England, courage in fear, those facing dragons of their own.

Saint George was a Roman soldier of Cappadocian Greek origin who served as a guard for Emperor Diocletian. He is venerated as a martyr of the early fourth century, having been tortured and beheaded for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. While many details of his life are shrouded in legend, his courage in the face of persecution remains a powerful witness. The most famous legend, his slaying of a dragon, is understood symbolically as the triumph of faith over evil. Today, Catholics honor Saint George as a model of fortitude and integrity under pressure, invoking his intercession for moral courage in spiritual battles. He is the patron saint of soldiers, scouts, England, and all who face great fears or adversities.
