CHARBEL MAKHLOUF

Patron of the sick, Lebanon, hermits, those seeking silence, healing.

Saint Charbel Makhlouf was a Maronite monk and hermit who lived in Lebanon during the 19th century. Born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf in 1828, he entered the Monastery of Our Lady in Mayfouq and later moved to Saint Maron Monastery, where he took the name Charbel. He lived a life of intense prayer, fasting, and manual labor, and later received permission to live as a hermit at the Hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul. His life was marked by profound humility, obedience, and devotion to the Eucharist. After his death in 1898, his tomb became a site of numerous reported healings and miracles, leading to his canonization in 1977. Today, Saint Charbel is venerated as a powerful intercessor for physical and spiritual healing, and as a model of contemplative life. He is the patron saint of the sick, Lebanon, hermits, those seeking silence, healing, and those of Eastern Christian heritage.
