CECILIA

Patron of musicians, singers, composers, the deaf, poets.

Saint Cecilia is a Roman martyr honored since at least the fifth century. According to ancient tradition, she was a noblewoman who, despite being forced into marriage, remained a consecrated virgin. During the wedding festivities, she is said to have sung in her heart to God alone. She converted her husband, Valerian, and his brother, Tiburtius, to the Christian faith, and all three were martyred for their belief. Cecilia was sentenced to be suffocated in the baths of her own home, but when this failed, an executioner attempted to behead her. She survived for three days, witnessing to her faith and arranging for her home to be given to the Church. For Catholics today, she is a powerful example of fidelity to Christ, showing that worship and prayer can be an interior melody that sustains the soul through suffering. She is the patroness of musicians, singers, and poets.
A PRAYER TO CECILIA

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Cecilia, who sang to you in her heart, we ask for the grace to make our lives a song of praise. Help all musicians and artists to use their gifts for your glory. Grant comfort to the deaf and all who suffer in silence, that they may know the interior music of your love. May our prayers rise to you like a harmonious hymn, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
