BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS

Patron of the sick, the poor, shepherds, the simple of heart, those who feel small.

Bernadette Soubirous was born in Lourdes, France, in 1844, into a family of profound poverty. From February to July 1858, the fourteen-year-old Bernadette reported eighteen apparitions of a beautiful lady in the grotto of Massabielle. During these visions, the lady identified herself as the Immaculate Conception and asked for prayer, penance, and the building of a chapel. A spring of water emerged at the site, which became associated with numerous healings and pilgrimages. Despite intense public scrutiny and questioning by Church and civil authorities, Bernadette remained humble and steadfast in her account. She later joined the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where she lived a life of hidden service and chronic illness until her death in 1879. Today, she is venerated as a witness to the Virgin Mary's message at Lourdes, a major site of Catholic pilgrimage and healing. She is a powerful intercessor for those seeking humility and trust in God's plan. Her primary patronage is for the sick, the poor, and those who feel small or overlooked.
A PRAYER TO BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Bernadette, we ask for the grace of humble faith. Help us to trust in your providence, especially in times of poverty, sickness, or feeling unseen. May we, like your servant Bernadette, respond with simplicity and obedience to your call in our lives. Grant healing and consolation to all who are suffering, and guide pilgrims who seek your grace. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
