AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO

Patron of theologians, converts, those struggling with the past, restless hearts, thinkers.

Augustine of Hippo was born in 354 in Thagaste, North Africa. After a youth spent in worldly pursuits and philosophical inquiry, he underwent a profound conversion in Milan, famously recounted in his spiritual autobiography, the Confessions. Baptized by Saint Ambrose in 387, he returned to Africa, founded a monastic community, and was later ordained a priest and then Bishop of Hippo. For over three decades, he served as a prolific writer and preacher, defending Christian doctrine against heresies and producing foundational works of theology, such as "The City of God." He is honored as a Doctor of the Church for his profound influence on Christian thought. For Catholics today, Augustine remains a powerful example of God's relentless grace, showing that no soul is beyond redemption. His writings continue to guide seekers and scholars alike, offering profound insights into faith, grace, and the human condition. He is the patron saint of theologians and converts.
