ANTHONY OF PADUA

Patron of lost things, lost people, lost causes, lost faith, the poor.

Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195. He first joined the Augustinian order but later became a Franciscan friar, inspired by the martyrdom of Franciscan missionaries. He became a renowned and eloquent preacher, traveling throughout Italy and France to teach theology and combat heresy. His profound knowledge of Scripture earned him the title 'Evangelical Doctor.' Anthony died in Padua, Italy, on June 13, 1231, and was canonized less than a year later. He is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. For Catholics today, Saint Anthony remains a powerful intercessor, a helper in times of spiritual and material need, and a model of evangelical preaching and charity. He is the patron saint of lost items, the poor, and travelers.
