AGNES OF ROME

Patron of young women, girls, betrothed couples, purity, chastity.

Saint Agnes of Rome was a young Christian martyr who died around the year 304 during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. According to early accounts, she was only twelve or thirteen years old when she was arrested for her faith. She refused to renounce Christianity or to accept a forced marriage, choosing instead to consecrate her virginity to Christ. Her steadfastness led to her execution, and she is venerated as one of the most renowned martyrs of the early Church. Her name, Agnes, is derived from the Latin word for 'lamb,' and she is often depicted with one. For Catholics today, Saint Agnes is a powerful example of unwavering faith and moral courage, particularly for the young. She demonstrates that holiness and profound commitment to God are possible at any age. Her life inspires the faithful to remain pure of heart and resolute in their beliefs, even when faced with great societal or personal pressure. She is the patron saint of young women, girls, and victims of abuse.
A PRAYER TO AGNES OF ROME

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of your beloved servant Saint Agnes, we ask for the grace of courage and purity of heart. Help us to imitate her steadfast faith, especially in moments of trial and temptation. Protect all young people, that they may grow in virtue and love for you. Grant strength to those who suffer abuse, and guide them to your healing peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
